Coral Reef Explorers
Occurs daily through August 2010

Carnival Cruise Lines and the Museum of Discovery and Science both share a love and concern for the beautiful coral reefs that inhabit the warm oceans of South Florida. This October, the Museum will debut a new set of programs that will highlight coral reefs, marine conservation, and other ocean related science. These programs will be conducted from the new Carnival Cruise Lines, Reef Explorers LIVE! demonstration area. Here is just a sample of some of the new and engaging programs that will be part of this exciting new visitor experience at the Museum. Generously sponsored by Carnival Cruise Lines. *Note: Program topics and hours change daily.
  • It’s Alive!
Coral reefs aren’t just rocks, but millions upon millions of microscopic living animals. Look at coral polyps under a microscope, touch different types of coral that are found off the Florida Coast, and then take a look at the Museum’s very own Coral Reef aquarium.
  • Artificial Intelligence
No, not aliens, but new and intelligent ways scientists and kids are helping save the coral reefs by designing special artificial reefs called Reef Balls! Learn about these creations and other artificial reef projects and then design your own artificial reef.
  • Build a Boat!
Learn all about the science of sinking and floating. Experiment with water displacement, forces and density. Put your new science skills to the test by building your own boat and see if it is sea worthy.
  • The Aqua-Lab
Discover the importance of the coral reefs and why they are in danger. Learn about the causes of reef bleaching, conduct calcium testing, and study the effects of climate change on the coral reef ecosystems.
  • All Washed Up
Collecting sea shells is a great way to enjoy the shoreline. During this activity, reef explorers will touch interesting artifacts that the waves have pushed ashore like shells, sea glass, starfish and much more!
